Hard sits right on the Austrian shore of Lake Constance, between the Bregenzer Ach river and the mouth of the New Rhine – from our apartments you can reach the lake in around 10 minutes. The lakeside parks, the Schleienlöcher nature reserve and the Mittelweiherburg textile printing museum are among the places you can explore without a car.

Hard on Lake Constance: a quick introduction

The market town of Hard belongs to the district of Bregenz in Vorarlberg, Austria's westernmost federal state. It lies on the shore of Lake Constance, right where the Bregenzer Ach and the New Rhine flow into the lake. Our two Apartments in Hard on Lake Constance are so central that you can walk to the town centre in around 5 minutes – a grocery store, restaurants, a doctor and a school are all close by, and the bus stop is right outside the house.

Nature: lakeside parks, the Bregenzerach and the Schleienlöcher

For walks and fresh air, Hard is perfectly placed between the Bregenzerach recreation area, the river mouth and the lakeside parks along the shore. A special destination is the Schleienlöcher: a nature reserve in the Rhine delta between the Dornbirner Ach and the New Rhine, with bays, ponds and old side arms of the rivers. These habitats owe their name to the tench – "Schleie" in German – a fish that is common here.

Culture and sights in Hard

The market town has plenty to offer culturally, too:

• Parish church of St Sebastian – on the Uferstraße, close to the lake. An earlier building was erected in Renaissance style by Balthasar Broll in 1684; today's neo-Romanesque church was built from 1862 to plans by Leonhard v. Clarini and consecrated in 1876.
• Church of St Martin – on the Mühlestraße, built 1974–1976.
• Mittelweiherburg textile printing museum – in 1794, a textile printing workshop was set up in the former moated castle, at the time one of Austria's most important textile printing factories. Today the museum can also be visited on guided tours.
• Villa Jenny – the villa of Melchior and Samuel Jenny, the former owners of the textile printing factory, now open to visitors as an art museum, among other things.
• Hard-Fußach water tower – built in 1900.
• Town hall – a 1996 building that looks lens-shaped from above (architects Klas & Lässer).
• Rheintalhaus – a 17th-century log house at Landstraße 8, dated 1671.

Bregenz and the festival

From Hard you are quickly in neighbouring Bregenz: the bus stop right outside the house offers excellent connections to Bregenz, Lauterach and Wolfurt. A summer highlight is the Bregenz Festival – if you attend the performances, you stay in Hard in peace and quiet, yet close to the action.
